Child's Play

It's time to inspire the next generation. I consider it my parental duty to demonstrate that there are more colors on a hillside in autumn than on any screen, that there is more to listen to sitting in the dark beside the lake than on any surround sound system, and that upholstery and plastic are most enjoyable after thoroughly wearing yourself out feeling the sun and the wind, rough bark and sharp rocks.

Take your kids hiking, one at a time, and talk the entire time. Compare the tracks your shoes leave. Know which berries are edible and taste them. Learn the names of flowers. Throw leaves in a stream and see which ones are fastest. There are a hundred ways to enjoy nature besides traveling through it. Find a new one.
